Crypto Theft on the Rise: Hackers Use Fake Phones to Steal Funds

A new tactic in cybercrime is emerging, with hackers using counterfeit Android phones loaded with malware to steal cryptocurrency from unsuspecting users. Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has revealed this unsettling trend, detailing how thousands of infected devices are being sold at low prices, potentially impacting millions globally. These devices contain a modified version of the Triada trojan, known for its ability to compromise Android devices, leading to theft of valuable digital assets. 2,600 users have already been affected, with origins primarily from Russia. Kaspersky Lab cybersecurity expert Dmitry Kalinin highlights the malware’s destructive potential, stating that it’s one of the most challenging threats to Android devices. He points out that this new version of the malware is present in devices before they are sold, and likely originated through compromised supply chains. These attacks target users with fake phones and potentially lead to a large financial loss. Kaspersky recommends purchasing smartphones solely from authorized distributors and taking precautions against such scams.
