7-Eleven Joins South Korea’s CBDC Payment Trial

South Korean convenience store chain 7-Eleven is participating in a pilot program testing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Running from April 1 to June 30, the trial offers customers discounts of up to 10% on purchases when using CBDCs. This nationwide initiative led by the Bank of Korea and financial regulatory authorities allows for the conversion of bank deposits into CBDC for purchases. The pilot program is designed to contribute to a prototype system for the future monetary framework in South Korea.
