Tech giant Google has introduced short-term precipitation weather forecasts to its Search platform in Africa, marking a significant advancement for the region. This groundbreaking feature utilizes Google Research’s AI-powered nowcasting model, MetNet, which leverages satellite data and ground observations to provide highly accurate precipitation forecasts, even in areas with limited radar coverage. The technology boasts the ability to predict global precipitation within a 5km radius every 15 minutes for the next 12 hours. This innovative solution addresses the critical need for reliable weather forecasting across Africa, where dense ground radar is scarce and global models often fall short. The Google AI innovation hub in Accra has been actively working on this project for years, focusing on empowering Africans with accurate precipitation forecasts within the next few hours. By combining AI technology with satellite observations, MetNet fills data gaps and overcomes limitations in regions where traditional weather forecasting methods struggle.
