Cyber criminals have devised a new tactic to steal cryptocurrency from unsuspecting victims: exploiting legitimate job opportunities. A malware-laden app called ‘GrassCall’ is the latest weapon in their arsenal, and it’s being used to target those interested in crypto jobs. The scheme has been uncovered by cybersecurity firms who have tracked its use by cybercrime group ‘Crazy Evil’. BleepingComputer reported on February 26th that this group, known for its focus on cryptocurrency theft, abruptly stopped the scam after many victims came forward. Websites and LinkedIn profiles associated with the fake job offers were taken down, and those affected are speaking out about the loss of their crypto wallets. The ‘Crazy Evil’ group’s latest scheme involved a fake crypto firm called ‘Chain Seeker’, which used social media accounts to create seemingly legitimate job listings on platforms such as LinkedIn and CryptoJobsList. Those interested in the positions were then asked to download ‘GrassCall’, a malware-laden app, after being directed to an infected website controlled by the group. Dozens of people who applied for these roles have reported encountering this scam. The scam was so convincing that many users felt fooled.
