11 States Drop Right of Way Charges to Boost Nationwide Broadband Expansion

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has announced that 11 states have agreed to waive the Right of Way (RoW) charges for telecom infrastructure. This decision, prompted by a request from the federal government, aims to accelerate broadband expansion across the country. The move was made following reports from participants of the Senior Executive Course 46 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), who presented recommendations on bolstering Nigeria’s digital economy to President Bola Tinubu. RoW charges represent fees paid by telecom companies to state governments for access rights to install, maintain, and upgrade their infrastructure in any location within Nigeria. 18 states have now agreed to review these charges, a significant development that could boost telecom operations. The decision comes after years of negotiations and concerns regarding the financial burden RoW charges imposed on operators. This move aims to reduce the cost barrier to broadband expansion, with industry experts anticipating faster deployment and nationwide coverage.
