A high-profile breach at Coinbase involving a bribed customer support agent has led to the attacker converting stolen Bitcoin into Ethereum, highlighting the vulnerability of centralized platforms and the need for stronger security measures. The attack saw nearly 97,000 users’ data compromised, leading the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch an investigation. The attacker converted over $42 million worth of stolen Bitcoin to Ethereum through a decentralized protocol called Thorchain before dumping Ethereum in various other transactions. This raises concerns about how easily sophisticated criminals can escape detection and utilize anonymity infrastructure for illicit activities.
