Despite claims that it ceased operations in November 2023, the cryptocurrency-stealing malware Inferno Drainer remains active and targets wallets of cryptocurrency users. According to a recent report by cybersecurity firm Check Point Research (CPR), the malware has already stolen over $9 million from nearly 30,000 user wallets since its latest update in 2023. The primary targets are Ethereum and BNB Chain users. Researchers found that Inferno Drainer utilizes single-use smart contracts and on-chain encryption for enhanced stealth capabilities, while also employing a proxy system to hide communication traffic, making the attacks difficult to trace. Recent phishing attacks by the malware mimic the verification interface of the well-known Discord bot Collab.Land, using subtle visual differences to trick users into signing malicious transactions. CPR urges users to verify the legitimacy of platforms before connecting their wallets to mitigate potential risks from this sophisticated attack.
