Kenny Li, co-founder of Manta Network, narrowly escaped a sophisticated phishing attack orchestrated through a meticulously crafted Zoom scam. Li recounted his terrifying experience in a detailed post shared on X (formerly Twitter) and details the tactics used by potential attackers linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. He describes how genuine faces appeared on camera during a seemingly legitimate Zoom call, yet there was no audio, prompting him to download a script file – under the guise of an update. His suspicions were confirmed when he requested verification via Telegram, only for the imposters to vanish. The attack involved pre-recorded video footage of compromised accounts and lacked the quality of AI deepfakes but instead appeared like regular webcam captures. Similar incidents have been reported by other crypto professionals with reports of similar requests from individuals. As a reminder, Li urges caution when receiving unexpected download prompts during video calls. He emphasizes that any downloaded file, regardless of its disguise – should raise alarm bells.
