Two Republican candidates who received significant financial support from the crypto industry’s political action committee (PAC), Fairshake, secured seats in the U.S. House of Representatives following special elections in Florida. Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine were elected in districts previously held by Democrats, according to data from the Associated Press. Patronis won the 1st Congressional District with a significant margin, defeating Democrat Gay Valimont. Fine secured victory in the 6th Congressional District with 56.7% of the vote against Democrat Josh Weil. This seat had been vacant following Mike Waltz’s appointment as White House national security advisor. These districts have historically leaned Republican. However, recent elections suggest a narrowing gap for GOP candidates. Fairshake, supported by major crypto industry players such as Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz, actively contributed to both campaigns, spending nearly $1.16 million on ads for Fine and $347,000 for Patronis’ campaign. Both newly elected representatives are vocal supporters of the cryptocurrency sector. Fine highlighted Florida’s enthusiasm for crypto innovation in a social media post earlier this year, while Fairshake has channeled around $170 million into political campaigns supporting candidates aligned with the industry’s interests. The victories boost Republican representation in the House to 220 seats, compared to the Democrats’ 213. Two remaining vacancies due to recent deaths of Texas Rep. Sylvester Turner and Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva, further impact House composition. While a GOP majority would have been maintained even if these elections had gone differently, the wins bolster efforts to advance crypto-friendly legislation. The additional support could prove pivotal for the recently introduced GENIUS Act, which cleared the Senate Banking Committee with an 18-6 vote on March 13th.
